Highlighted Choice

The Substance

Director Coralie Fargeat's unflinching commentary examines the tyranny of female beauty and the perceived horrors of growing older. Demi Moore presents an inspired performance as Elisabeth, an aging celebrity reduced to hosting an aerobics show on television. Edged out by her deceitful superior Harvey, she turns to a mysterious and gruesome process known as "The Substance". This creates a younger clone named Sue, culminating in an increasingly vampiric relationship between the two. October 17th, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This classic whodunit mystery features Knightley playing Laura, an ace reporter who decides to take a hiatus from reporting on global conflict to embark on an opulent ship with an ailing Scandinavian billionaire and philanthropist, her husband, as well as other filthy rich passengers. But after an enigmatic female falls into the sea during the evening and the entire crew denies she ever existed, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Available now, on Netflix

Presence Film

The acclaimed director pushes his film-making abilities with this clever paranormal narrative filmed completely through the eyes of a ghost. After a clan including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their recent residence, the lens – as the unseen entity – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of conscious of the ghostly being, and it seems protective of her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that remains concise, including a revelation you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, Sky Cinema

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Cage fully commits to his eccentric image through this self-referential adventure. He plays a narcissistic celebrity named Nicolas Cage who takes on a $1m payday to attend a celebration on the Spanish island for billionaire superfan Javi. Hired by the intelligence agency to spy on the potential kingpin, his unique performing skills proves useful. Saturday 11 October, prime time, Channel 4

The Black Phone

Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller stands strong without requiring a continuation. Located in the late 70s in Denver, several kidnappings has left the youth on edge. After Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and imprisoned in a dungeon, he anticipates a fatal end. But the disconnected phone in the room keeps ringing, with spooky callers providing assistance, and the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, nighttime, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the conflict between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for Mammon in this director's brilliantly over-the-top film adaptation of the disgraced TV preacher and her criminal husband. Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who declares early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye commence profiting from the American public's religious faith. It's a spectacle of poor styling, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, yet Chastain succeeds to depict Tammy Faye with compassion. Tuesday 14 October, early morning, the Film4 channel

Black Bag

This period's another release by the same director is a spy mystery as tight as the polo necks worn by the actor's UK spy. He receives a mission to identify a traitor among the team from five suspects – among them is his own wife. Both actors are masters of deadpan cool, so a delicious mind game of truth or lie develops. The supporting cast join in the intelligent intelligence fun. This Friday, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
