A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
